How an early, integrated approach to formulation can simplify and accelerate drug development
It’s perhaps easy to think that the secret to developing a successful medicine is simply about creating a highly effective drug molecule that meets a key clinical need and is safe to use.
But while developing a great active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) is, of course, a vital part of the drug development process, it’s only part of the story – you need to have a suitable vehicle to deliver it
within the body. Unfortunately, the importance of drug formulation is often overlooked for early drug evaluation, with planning often coming at much later stages in the development process. Such an approach can leave drug development programs vulnerable to costly and lengthy delays or even failure.
Here, we draw on the experience of Dr Mark Saunders, CEO at Aptuit Potters Bar Ltd, to find out more about how taking an integrated approach to drug formulation as early as possible in drug
development can produce the best possible products with the greatest chance of success.
