Bola-shaped Glycocalix[4]arenes for efficient and specific drug delivery systems

Many important physiological and pathological events, such as intercellular communication, cell trafficking, immune response, infections by bacteria and viruses, growth and metastasis of tumour cells, are triggered by the recognition between carbohydrate moieties of glycoconjugate and the corresponding cell protein receptors.

Glycocalixarenes are calixarenes functionalized with several saccharide units that already demonstrated to efficiently work as multivalent ligands with very interesting interaction properties towards carbohydrate recognition proteins. In the so called 1,3 alternate geometry, glycocalix[4]arenes can be considered as bolaamphiphile. Their combination with traditional liposomes can produce new potential systems for efficient and specific targeted drug delivery, based on carbohydrate-protein recognition.
